I was planning on writing a review of a different TV show. But then my Facebook newsfeed was flooded with acts from the first episode of America’s Got Talent (Season 12). Putting aside the feelings of inadequacy inspired by watching preteens with so much marketable talent, I knew I had to drop my old article and watch the season premiere immediately.

But I have a confession to make: This was my first time watching America’s Got Talent. No, I have been living under a rock for the last decade. I just haven’t had cable. In fact, I still don’t, but did you know you can watch AGT on the NBC website? This let me have the most perfect night watching a contest reality show, which is an itch that Netflix often doesn’t scratch.

America’s Got Talent features a variety of acts from all over America, and I’m not kidding when I say, this show has everything! Singers, dancers, comedians, escape artists, even a musical Donald Trump impersonator and a chicken who plays the piano. The series kicks off with acts audition for celebrity judges (Mandel, B., Klum, and Cowell) who select continue to the live show competition where America gets to vote for the winner of the $1 million prize.

Besides feeling culturally relevant at the office for a first time in a while, the reason I loved this show is because it’s a casual watch. You don’t need to think about complex characters or a plot full of twists. You can just veg out and enjoy people showing off their talents and living out their dreams. And as embarrassing as this is to admit, I found myself teary eyed more than once and straight up crying when a 12-year old ventriloquist automatically moved on to the live show with her singing puppet.

There’s only one thing about this show that drives me insane, and her name is Tyra Banks. I knew it was a risk. I was a huge America’s Next Top Model fan but as the seasons went on, Tyra got crazier and crazier. Don’t get me wrong, she’s calmed down a considerable amount, but I still have trouble moving past my ANTM days.

Parents: This show is a blast for everyone in the entire family! Kids will enjoy watching the acts, teens will be inspired to become better at their talents, and parents will enjoy a show their kids want to watch, too. Most acts are tame; however, there may be risqué acts (think: a spicy tango dance) or sarcastic comments made by judges.
